Learning VDMX and Mad Mapper is one of the most unique art styles I have ever had experience with. I had the opportunity to use these programs during this project. After practicing with these programs I was able to present a live show at the Spectra Art Space Gallery in Denver. The Spectra gallery is a beautiful gallery made up of dozens of different artists' sculptures and paintings. This gallery has a neon eclectic vibe with a wide range of art styles. Image
After debating for quite a while where I should set up my show I eventually landed on a beautiful sculpture of an eyeball in the clouds with saran wrap tentacles coming down. This sculpture was installed on the ceiling of one of the exhibits so I had to find a way to set up my projector in a way where if people walked into the exhibit they would not be blocking the light coming from the projector. Once I had properly set up the show I began mapping individual parts of the eye, the clouds, and the wall. I knew I had wanted to use lightning videos in my exhibit as I had already pre-prepared them for the show and they were perfect to use on the cotton cloud part of the sculpture. The video mapped over the eyelid is a video of clouds edited in VDMX to create an extremely colorful flowing rainbow effect. The white of the eye contains a video of an electric zap on a loop and the Iris is a ticking clock.
This live performance, while impromptu, was still able to contain meaning. The main goal of the show was to use the eye and the lightning to represent The internal turmoil of all human beings. The lightning on both the outside and the inside of the eye represents fast paced conflict and the energy created by our own stress and emotions. The clock within the pupil represents our own mortality and the color around the eye represents the life and creativity that still exists within each individual. The combination of all of these elements lead to an aesthetically pleasing performance as well as a meaningful one.
